When this little guy's mom contacted me back in October, she had wanted to get photos set up before the Christmas holiday.

So, we scheduled.

Then we canceled.

Then we re-scheduled.

Then we canceled.

This went on and on for a few months, as each of us battled our kids being sick, work conflicts, more sickness...you get the idea.

Finally...we were able to meet up this week for photos. And I'm so glad it worked out, because Ayden was a total joy to work with.

We had to bust out the Skittles at one point, but that's pretty common for three-year-olds. Once he had those fruity little snacks in his hand, he'd do just about anything. Lol.

While I was taking his picture, I of course noticed his beautiful eyes...but wow. They really stood out to me while I was editing photos. What a lucky little guy!

Miss Livia | Grand Rapids Newborn Photographers

I'm always nervous when a newborn comes to my studio, because I never know what to expect.

At least with toddlers, I can dangle Skittles in front of their eyes and get a half-smile or a, "Cheeeeese!"

Thankfully, with this one, I didn't have to worry.

Once Miss Livia was asleep, she was down for the count.

We twisted her around, changed her, loved on her, and never once did we hear a peep.

She had the most beautiful skin and that hair...oh my. The hair.

How do I edit a "clean" photo?

While most photographers would love to be able to move photos off their cameras and give them right to their clients, the reality is that even the most expensive camera can use the help of a little editing software.

Personally, I use Photoshop Elements. I would love to invest in something like CS5, but I don’t really see the need. I’m not a graphic designer, and I don’t have the need for much beyond what Elements is able to do for me.

As a beginner, it is very, very easy to get roped in to “editing” your photos.

What do I mean by this?

Let me explain.

Here is my SOOC (straight out of camera) image, compared to my EDIT. As you can see, I am a fan of clean, warm processing. This process did not come to me overnight – it has been a long 4-year battle of trying to discover my “style.”

In the past (as in 2008...please don't hold it against me), my style might have consisted of this:

Heavy vignette. This is one of the most common problems with people who don’t have a lot of editing experience. However, you can see that such a drastic black ring around my photo really takes away from the gorgeous subject herself.

When using vignette, you want to use it as more of a tool, instead of a hindrance. In other words, allow it to bring out the darks at the edge of your photo so that it gives more depth.

Here is another common mistake:

Over-use of actions. Personally, I have invested a lot of money into Florabella actions. She does beautiful work. Does this mean you need to run out and do the same so you can have nice photos? Of course not. There are a lot of photographers who don’t use actions at all, and there are also a lot of photographers who download free actions from the Internet. Whatever works for you is best; again, however, actions must not be taken lightly. They are a tool.

You want the action to help your photo to stand out, but you don’t want your photo to look fake. In the instance above, I ran Florabella’s Ruby action at 100%. I took a gorgeous photo and destroyed any sense of reality. Instead, try reducing the opacity of the action to, say, 35%. Your photo would then look more like this:

Some photographers – even well-known professionals – like the look of really, really, really, reallyreallyreally smooth skin. The problem with this is the same problem with the action photos above – you start to lose the “reality” of the photo when you make your subject look like one giant ball of cream.

I like to use Portraiture for photos, but reduced to 8%, feathered very lightly. This helps me to cover blemishes, and reduce the size of pores, but I can still keep the overall skin tone looking normal and true to form.

Alright, so here is a step-by-step for how I achieved my clean edit of my subject, Myla.

Again, here is the SOOC:

First, I cropped to 11x15 (a common size for cropping, as it enables the client to print without running into any problems).

Then, I added some warmth. Here, I used Florabella’s Soft Warmth at 50%.

After that, I ran Coffee Shop’s Eye Bright action at 100%. I brushed over her eyes, her lips, and her hair. See how each of those dark elements stand out a bit more?

I also ran Portraiture, making sure to erase back in any lines on her skin, her eyes, her hair, and her coat (otherwise you start to lose details that you don’t want to lose).

One of my favorite Florabella actions is April. Here, I used it at 35%. I then added some contrast by filling in the center of the photo with some light, and upping my levels to 8.

Finally, I used Florabella’s Deep Blue Sky – intended for the sky, just like the name suggests – on the trees in the background. Don’t be afraid to get creative! I love the way it makes such a bleak background stand out so much more. (Don’t forget to reduce the opacity! Here, it is reduced to 65%).

Once I added a little more contrast, I sharpened the photo.

Voila! The final image:

2012 Travel Dates

In recent years, when I have traveled out of state for photo marathons, I have done so primarily for boudoir sessions. This year, I have decided to book anything and everything that comes my way. :)

I am traveling to each of these various cities within the next 11 months. If you are interested, contact me and I can give you further details.

I am also in need of some models - boudoir models, to be exact. Any models will be given photos at 50% off the package of their choice, and must be willing to model for at least TWO one-on-one mentoring sessions.

How did she do that?

Portrait photography has always been my passion, but every now and then I like to change it up and take photos of entirely different things.

I'm not a big fan of landscape photos, but I love, love, LOVE to get in nice and close with my Macro lens and capture some of the finer details in life.

Today in Michigan, it's freezing cold and snowing. Not exactly "playing outdoors" weather. Lol.

So Thad and I experimented with some oil and water. This was honestly a great little science experiment for him---a learning opportunity for him, and fun for me. Winning!

Anyways, here is the final result of our experiment:

If you want to try it as well, here are the steps I followed:

1. Place some water (I filled it up half way) in a glass bowl

2. Set the bowl on a white surface (I used a cutting board)

Note: If you set this up in front of a sliding glass door or window, then you won't need to use your flash.

3. Add as much baby oil as your heart desires. If the oil begins to glob into really large bowls, just swirl your finger in the water and they will break up.

4. Add different food coloring - one or two drops of each color at a time is plenty

5. I used a Macro lens for these photos. The lens has an auto-focus button, but I focused manually. This allowed me to get in nice and close to the water, so I could capture the details.

And that's it!

I've known Linda for just short of 10 years now; her son, Keith, and I were good friends in college. It's funny how life works and things change. I never would have anticipated photographing Linda's wedding when I was in school, and I don't think I could have ever foreseen her and I keeping in better touch with one another than I figured Keith and I might. Either way, I am grateful for the opportunity to have photographed her most special day, and am so thankful that she was willing to bring me all the way to Austin, TX, to do so.

Linda's husband, Claud, is a riot. I absolutely loved his laid-back Southern style. The only time I ever heard him speak a negative word was when the food was being passed at dinner, and the menu had been more complicated than "meat and potatoes." They definitely complement one another beautifully.

Congrats again, Claud and Linda. It was wonderful having the chance to see everyone and help capture the memories for your special day!

Any photographer worth his salt will tell you that when a beautiful woman calls you and inquires about taking photos of her with her horse, you don't turn her down. There is something about the entire setting - in any photographer's mind - that wins the day.

I loved this session.

There was a fire going in the home. Thanksgiving dinner was cooking in the oven and everything smelled like turkey.

It was like a perfect holiday card. Lol.

The C Family | Grand Rapids family photographers

This particular shoot was very special to me.

Where I normally would spend an hour to two taking photos for a client, I spent almost 4 hours with this family in particular. I got as many shots as possible, and am hoping to give her a gallery that's a little larger than normal.

What can I say, sometimes I play "favorites." ;)

Colette and I met back in January 2007 when the two of us found out we were pregnant. We lived in entirely different parts of the country, but we both joined a parenting board online - we were virtual friends. Lol.

Our first meeting was only 8 or 10 months after our boys were born, when we found ourselves relatively close (within 2 hours). Both of our boys weren't exactly walking, and they were still just babies.

Today?

Colette and her family drove alllllll the way from Iowa, just to have their family photos taken. Literally, they left late last night, and headed back home after our session ended.

How flattering.

And this is what our two little guys look like now:

It was so cool watching the two of them play together - I feel like I know so much about Nigel, even though we've never really spent any time together. It was so, so cool that she and her family came out this weekend.

It was also really cool that I got to meet the other half of her family - her husband, Joe, and his son, Ayden. Oh my. Ayden's smile could light up an entire world, I am sure of it. He was so, so sweet.

This past Spring, my son's preschool contacted me about donating a session or two to their annual auction, to help raise money for the school. Of course, I was happy to do so.

The W family is the first family to have contacted me since the auction, after having bid the highest on one of my sessions.

They were so sweet, and so nice, and so easy. Seriously, this entire session was maybe 30 minutes (?) and we got so many wonderful shots.

This little man was my most challenging client, yet.

He made me work. And he made his mama work.

And to be honest, at one point he made me feel like I was about to be defeated.

As you can see, this little cutie has one of the sweetest faces I have ever seen on a newborn.

Ron and Gracia | Grand Rapids Wedding Photographers

I first met Gracia last Fall when she and her family came to me for a portrait session for her parents. Just one year later, she had met, fell in love with, and become engaged to the man of her dreams, Ron.

Gracia and Ron had much of a whirlwind engagement - I was literally asked if I could take photos for the wedding about 3 weeks before the ceremony. Sometimes those are the best kinds of surprises - when past clients call, urgent and hopeful that you are available, because they love your work and they want you to be there to document it.

Of course, I said yes.

The entire day was filled with beautiful scenery, wonderful friendships, and envious love.

Alright, the secret's out.

My newest senior representative? Well...she's not a senior.

But I absolutely love her look too much to not keep her on the pay roll for at least 2 years. ;)

Tessa came to me, originally, as a student interested in photography. She wanted to follow me on a shoot one day as part of a school project. I happily obliged, but as the shoot went on, my camera turned to her.

It was like gravity. Seriously. The camera knew what was up.

So, we set up a shoot for the following day, and this is what we came up with.

I absolutely love her gallery. It's a perfect combination of urban, country...and random dogs. ;)

Pioneer Woman | Editing Challenge

I've read her book.

I make her recipes at Thanksgiving.

And I participate in her photo challenges.

This Week's Challenge: EDIT THIS

That's was her original version of her dog, Charlie, jumping over hay bales.

Her assignment basically calls for a different version, according to the artist.

So this was my interpretation:

That's a photo of my dream dog.

No, not a basset hound.

But a dog that ~~runs with~~ carries a camera in his mouth.

I asked Kellen's parents to write something meaningful to Kellen for their sneak peek later. I had no idea each of them would completely break me down at my own computer.

I was literally blubbering.

Love is awesome, especially when it's obvious.

Kellen James,

For me 2010, was a great year. In September (September 25^th to be exact – I wouldn’t want your mom to think I had already forgotten our anniversary date), I was able to marry my best friend, aka “Mommy” to you. Just when I thought the year couldn’t possibly get any better, I received the best Christmas present I have ever gotten. On the morning of December 24^th, I woke up and looked over at your mom who was wide awake (you will get to know that this is a rarity, she loves her sleep). This is when she informed me that she was pregnant. “Wow, we are going to be parents…Oh crap! We don’t know how to be parents.” Never had I experienced excitement and fear in such magnitude simultaneously, it was truly awesome.

No way 2011 was going to beat that, then 20 weeks into the pregnancy, in March, we went in for an ultrasound. That is when we found out we were having a boy! I was thrilled. In my head, I was already taking you to pick out your first baseball glove and getting your prepared for you first tee ball game. I guess there are a lot of diapers to change before we get to that point...A LOT OF DIAPERS!

Hmmmmm, could 2011 get any better? I didn’t think so, but it did! On September 13 at 1:55 in the morning, your mom and I got to see your face for the first time, you were perfect, 10 fingers, 10 toes and the sweetest face. I didn’t know it was possible to love someone so much the very first time you meet them, until we got to meet you.

As excited as I am right now, and you are only a week old, I am 100 times more excited to watch you grow. I am looking forward to the memories that we will get to create as a family. I look forward to experiencing all of the firsts along with you, from your first smile all the way to your first game at Comerica Park (don’t worry, it is actually okay if you don’t play baseball, your first game at Comerica Park can be us just going there as a family to enjoy it from the stands).

I want you to know, that as much as we can count on you to bring a smile to our face and warm our hearts, you can count on us to always be here for you. We will love you and support you and do everything in our power to give you a wonderful life. We will help guide you along the way to help you become everything that you will want to be (I am sure Michigan State has a program for whatever it is you decide on :)). We love you Kellen.

Dear Kellen,
I knew you were going to be a bit stubborn like Daddy and always running late like me when your due date came and went...and two weeks later, you still hadn't shown up. You were scheduled to be induced on the evening of Monday, September 12th. We spent the weekend relaxing at home and made a big dinner on the 11th. Right after dinner, I was not feeling great and was hoping this was the start of your arrival. I woke up around 1AM the next morning, the 12th, and knew it was time. At 3AM, I woke Daddy up and said 'I think I'm in labor, but you should go back to sleep'. He laughs about that now because really, who could sleep after that news?! We were both so excited to know that we would meet you soon. We ate breakfast, finished packing our hospital bag and took a walk with Wrigley, your furry big brother. We headed to the hospital around 8AM and spent the next four days there getting to know you and learning how to be parents in the most basic sense of the word.

After a long day laboring at the hospital on the 12th, we decided you needed a little bit of help to come out and meet us. We were wheeled down to the OR and you celebrated your birth day at 1:55 AM on September 13th. I remember looking over at you being placed on the warming table and being shocked at how big you looked, and wondering how it was that you fit inside of me for so many weeks. Physically, I felt empty but I cannot remember a time where my heart was more full. Daddy and I looked at each other and I think we were both a little surprised, even at this point, that we had a baby that we had dreamed about and talked about for years. I cried when Daddy brought you over to me because you were perfect. Very perfect...I think it was those few extra weeks of baking :)

Ever since I saw the words 'Pregnant' on the test in December, I've wondered what you looked like. Nothing could have prepared me for seeing your face for the first time. Your face is a reflection of Daddy's and it melts my heart when I see him cuddle with you and comfort you. He is a baby whisperer and can put you to sleep in his arms every time. I love holding you and having you gaze into my eyes when I tell you that I love you. I always thought I would feel differently when you had arrived...perhaps more mature, or wiser...after all, I am a parent which is the biggest responsibility I have ever had. However, bringing you home and spending time together as a family has been the most natural thing in the world. I doubt I am any more mature or any wiser but I am confident you love me anyway. The past week that we have spent together has had highs and lows-but the lows are few and far between and the highs are the best of my life.

I promise you that I will also be your ally and protector. I will always love you, regardless of the path that you forge in life. My hope is that your Daddy and I will provide you with the strength, compassion, intelligence and humor to live a life that is rich with happiness. You are also blessed to be surrounded by family and friends who loved you before they met you. The world you came into can be a scary place, but your Daddy and I will help guide you through it every step of the way.

The birth story of Kellen James | Grand Rapids birth photographers

I don't even know where to begin with this post.

First of all, I am so grateful to Tara and Brent for allowing me to be a part of such a special event in each of their lives. When we first met over coffee to discuss birth and newborn pictures, we were literally at Starbucks for nearly two hours. They are just genuinely fun, funny people...the kind of people I could see myself drinking beer with on Sundays.

Tara was due September 1, and I was leaving for a five-day trip on the 6th. I was wishing and hoping that she would go into labor by the 4th, just in case.

Well, she didn't.

So then I was wishing and hoping that she would hold baby Kellen in until the day after I returned.

Thankfully, she obliged. ;)

At 1am, Tara began feeling contractions, and by 3am, she was waking up her husband. Then, in what I think is the best part of the story, they sat down together and watched Good Morning, Vietnam before heading to the hospital. Lol.

It really doesn't get any better.

I arrived at the hospital when Tara was about 6cm dilated. The nurses were certain that she would have a baby before dinnertime; however, Kellen had other plans. With too large of a head to come out naturally, baby Kellen ended up being delivered via C-Section.

I flew to California this past weekend because my cousin, Britteny, was marrying her beau. My role, however, was two-fold:

1. I was the official photographer for the event, and

2. I was a guest of both Britteny and Shawn.

What an honor it was to be able to spend an entire day side-by-side with a loved member of my family, having the opportunity to document several of her tears, and several more smiles, as she embarks on one of the largest journeys of her entire life.

I watched the look on my uncle's face as he saw her for the first time.

I witnessed butterfly kisses with my aunt and laughter with others that I love.

I felt like I was at a family reunion, on steroids. I think I mention in every single post how lucky I feel to have this job. So, pardon me while I repeat myself.

There is nothing better.

Congratulations to you, Britteny and Shawn! I love you both and wish you a lifetime of adventures, dreams and happiness.

Trash the Dress | Grand Rapids photographers

One of my goals since I started doing photography awhile back was to eventually offer Trash the Dress sessions to my clients.

I know that a lot of brides are hesitant to commit to a session like this because it means taking their beloved wedding dress and dirtying it up, and possibly even destroying it. My answer to that? It will either hang in a closet for the next 50 years, or you can memorialize it with a photo shoot to make you feel and look beautiful, sexy, and just like you did that very day you walked down the aisle. With photography, you now have the ability to enjoy your wedding dress every single day.

Yellowstone | A personal post

My mom and I took my little guy to Yellowstone for a few days last week. Our time together was amazing - it involved wild bears, crazy water slides, close encounters with Bison, mother nature and everything beautiful that comes with the park itself, as well as Old Faithful, a wildfire, and the Grand Teton mountains.

I don't think anything could have made this trip more fun or perfect!

I hope each of you is having a wonderful summer...I can't believe it's just about over!

The only thing on this Earth that makes my job as a photographer more fun is when the parents of the children I am photographing show up with brauts and beers. It was a scene straight from a 1950s Modern Housekeeping magazine -- The women inside with the children, oooohing and awwwing at baby noises and toddler giggles; the men outside at the grill, beers in one hand and a spoonful of potato salad in the other.

Seriously, I'm blessed.

I have wonderful friends and an amazing job.

My little guy had "his best friend" - as he would tell you - over today for a play date.

Casting Call: Senior Reps

Are you about to start your senior year of high school within a 50-mile radius of the Grand Rapids area?

Do you like easy money?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, then you could become a senior representative for the 2011-2012 year at Catherine Jeter Photography!

So, let's play a little Q&A...

Q. How does it work?

A. Senior reps book their senior photo sessions with Catherine Jeter Photography in July, August, or the first week of September. Once the session is complete, reps will receive - in addition to their package - 50 rep cards to hand out to fellow senior/junior friends. From there, every session that is booked with Catherine Jeter Photography based on the rep's referral will earn that rep a portion of their referral's session.

Q. What exactly is a "rep card"?

A. Rep cards are almost like business cards, but they have your picture on the front! On the back is all of my contact information so that your friends can speak with me directly about senior portraits.

Q. What kind of commission will I be earning?

A. Senior reps will receive a 10% commission on each session that they refer. So, if you refer a friend and she spends $350, that's $35 in your pocket!

Q. Are there any other benefits to being a senior rep?

A. Of course! In addition to the commission, you will also receive 10% off your entire senior portrait session as well!

Q. Do you have any really awesome photos of your son to share?

A. Duh.

Holly + the girls | Grand Rapids family photographer

When we first moved to Michigan, we were in immediate need of a babysitter. Thad was 3 months old, and my husband and I were about to begin law school, full time.

So we did some searching.

And we found Holly.

Thankfully for us, she has been with us ever since. :)

Thad absolutely loves Miss Holly, and her girls. They spoil him rotten and treat him as "their own." Miss Holly is like a second mother to Thad, and the girls are definitely like his sisters. Someone even said to us recently, "That child will not grow up as an only child...he has too many sisters and brothers already!"

I wanted to show Holly my appreciation for all that she does (and, well, take some fun pictures), so we went out the other day with a few vintage finds and snapped away.

It was a ton of fun. I hope she and her girls love these images as much as I do!

Beyond the Sneak Peek | Chris + Andrea

I posted a few photos about a month ago to hold Chris and Andrea over until I was able to complete their entire wedding.

I've since decided that a little ol' sneak peek isn't very fair, especially since it really doesn't do justice to the overall beauty of the day.

Andrea was stunning.

Chris is a phenomenal dancer.

The food was entirely homemade, and there were tea cups on the tables.

Seriously. Awesome.

Thanks again Chris and Andrea. It was wonderful sharing in your special day with you, and I thank you for giving Mike and me the opportunity to document each step you took toward becoming "Mr. and Mrs."

The Splash Pad | {A personal post}

My husband and I took our little guy to the local splash pad today so he could run around and have a good time.

I loved seeing him there because two years ago, he was terrified. I have a ton of pictures of him screaming and crying because he was so afraid of the water shooting up and out of the ground.

Today was a totally different story - he loved it!

A Guy and his Snake | Grand Rapids Pet Photographer

So, while I was in California this past week, my cousin asked me if I could take some photos of him with his Reticulated Python, Medusa. He is trying to win a photo contest - the prize to which is a $10,000 snake. So I said, "Sure!"

This was definitely a new experience.

Plus, not only did I love taking photos of him and the snake, but my little 3- (almost 4) year-old wanted photos, too.

Now he's begging me to buy him a snake.

Ummm...we'll wait on that. ;)

Chris + Andrea | Allegan Wedding Photographer

In the short time that I have known Andrea and Chris, I have fallen in love with them.

No really.

They are fabulous.

First of all, it isn't every day when a bride says something like, "I trust you and your vision, Katie. We can do whatever you want for pictures." Words like that are a photographer's dream.

Second of all, they are just fun-loving, generous, beautiful people. And it's no wonder, considering the family that they each come from.

For a wedding of roughly 250 people, each of their families were hard at work all week decorating, baking (1,500 cookies), cooking (everything for dinner was 100% homemade) -- and I never heard a single person complain.

I feel very blessed to have shared in this special day for Andrea and Chris, and I wish for them a lifetime of love and happiness...

...50 years or more!

When Baby J was born, I was so bummed not to have a chance to do his newborn photos. So when I heard that he would be traveling with his mom alllll the way to Grand Rapids from Texas, I jumped at the chance to get him into my studio.

So while the reality of it is that he was in Grand Rapids to see his mommy graduate from law school, I like to pretend that they came all the way to Michigan for some family photos. ;)

He was so cute, and so sweet. At 6 months, all he did was smile. I love to photograph this age. It is total perfection.

Despite never having met this next woman, I greeted her with a big hug when she knocked on the door to the hotel room.

It really is so unlike me, but all of a sudden I bursted out with, "Oh, who cares! I'm about to see you half-naked! We should hug."

Lol.

Thankfully, she was a lot of fun and we ended up going out with some mutual friends later after my sessions were complete. Such a sweet Texas girl - and insanely smart!

Defining beauty | Dallas boudoir photographer

This woman is the absolute definition of 'beauty.' And I'm not talking solely about her obvious good looks.

I'm also talking about the fact that just a little over a year after surviving breast cancer, going through chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, she was 100% willing to put herself in front of the camera for her husband, and for herself.

Not many women I know would feel confident enough to do so after such an ordeal. I'm so glad she did so.

She is absolutely radiant in her photos, and I hope that, through these pictures, she is able to show at least one woman that "battle scars" are not the things that define you--they are the things that contribute to who you are, and what makes you beautiful.

And I can say with all the confidence in the world that she is absolutely beautiful, both inside and out.

Miss A | Dallas boudoir photographer

This was, by far, my most fun boudoir session while in Dallas (but more on that later).

Miss A and I have known each other for a long time, and I basically told her she was doing boudoir - she didn't really have a choice. I'm glad she agreed, because we had a ton of fun.

Alright, so on to the sexy pictures. Then I'll show you the "bloopers." Hehe.

Alright, so Miss A's husband loves to sky dive. Why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane is beyond me, but he's pretty into it. ;)

Anyways, she brought his jump suit to the shoot, with the intention of getting some cute pictures in it. And! That we did!

By the end (and after a few glasses of champagne), we thought it would be the best thing ever if she utilized her "skillz" and jumped onto the bed like she was sky diving.

OMG.

We were laughing so hard, my stomach hurt.

Here's a little storyboard for your enjoyment, from beginning of jump to end (although, don't kid yourselves - we did this many, many times). Lol.

Kristin contacted me back in March when she heard I would be traveling to Denver for a week. She asked me if we could do "newborn" photos --- after telling her that it might not turn out the same as those sleepy shots she usually sees online, she didn't care. She still wanted to try. And who can blame her? Maddie is absolutely gorgeous. :)

We definitely didn't get the sleepy shots we had tried for, but we still got some cute ones nonetheless.

Sweet Little Ashley | Traveling Newborn Photographer | Grand Rapids Newborn Photographer

I have known Kerry since we were 10 years old, in the 5th grade together. We were the best of friends for many years, and continued to be friends even as life got different for each of us, and we traveled along our separate paths. We played softball together, and traveled together. It's weird to think that now, we are exchanging stories of motherhood together.

Kerry's baby girl was born just 10 days ago. It worked perfectly for my time in Colorado, and we arranged to photograph her this afternoon.

Ashley was perfect. Having only made noise once, she slept for 90% of the session. She let me move her all around, poke her, and prod her. She even let me put some cute little headbands on her, which totally made my day. There's something about a newborn baby in a head band that totally makes me swoon.

Kerry, I had fun today with you and Ryan! I hope you love the photos. Congrats again on becoming a mommy. :)

I am constantly posting photos of other people's children and families...so isn't it only fair that I post photos of my own child and family as well!?

While I am here in Colorado, we thought it would be a great time to take some family photos--especially since my sister and her girls are also in town. It was a perfect day--a little chilly, but perfect nonetheless.

This is me and my little guy, Thad. Believe it or not, he's a little shy when it comes to the camera. Or maybe he's just a clown. It's still yet to be determined. ;)

My sister and my dad. This is a rare photo, but only because it isn't very often when both get in front of a camera and smile (rather than make a funny face).

My niece, Mackenzie. Such a sweetheart. Thad calls her "Da-kenzie," lol.

Sweet little Taylor. She is such a perfect cousin to Thad--very patient with him, and always willing to play his 3-year-old games.

When Thad saw his cousins posing for photos with the parasol, he absolutely had to get in on the action. Lol.

I'm still trying to convince my sister that she needs this photo on a canvas in her home. Her girls are so beautiful, and I love this photo.

My parents with Thad. He absolutely loves his grandparents. I'm so thankful for the special relationship he is able to have with them, despite us living so far away from them.

I get pretty psyched when these two come into my studio, for two reasons:

Today was a big day --- three photo shoots (one of which has been re-scheduled for tomorrow), and a date with two of my favorite Disney princesses...

These two cuties came to my studio today so they could surprise their mom with photos for Mother's Day. Apparently they were too excited, though, because they told her all about it and she ended up accompanying them to the shoot. Lol!

The sisterly love between these two is absolutely precious - made me miss my own two sisters!

Taylor is Two! | Grand Rapids Lifestyle Photographer

Amy had contacted me awhile back about doing pictures of her daughter, Taylor, for her second birthday. I have been shooting Taylor since she was itty bitty, and we've always done something different.

This time was no exception.

Amy and her husband bought a new home on the other side of town, but their old one still had a lot of personal and sentimental value. It was their first home they had ever bought together - and it was the home they lived in when they first brought Taylor home from the hospital. So, we decided that their old house would be the perfect spot for photos.

Instead of studio shots, we went for lifestyle portraits, with Taylor having fun in her old living room near the fire place, in her old bedroom, and in her mom and dad's old bathtub.

This was such a fun shoot for me because it was so different. Their home was an old Victorian home, designated an official historic home in the city of Grand Rapids. The wood is beautiful, and the inside of the home is incredible. It's amazing the kind of detail that went into homes when they were being built so many years ago...it's too bad that people don't seem to have the same desire for "attention to detail" when building these days as they did back then.

Miss Claire | Jenison children's photographer

Back when I first started taking pictures, Claire came to my studio for the first time after just having learned how to sit up on her own. Everything was going great - until my son threw a ball that hit Claire's mom in the face, and my cat proceeded to eat the pretty pink tutu Claire's mom had brought for her.

I was mortified.

Thankfully, she was able to look past those moments - lol - and has since been back to my studio a handful of times.

I always look forward to Claire coming because she is such a beautiful little girl. Yes, it helps to take beautiful photos, but when your subject is gorgeous? It makes your job that much easier.

And, once again, she didn't let me down.

Just as an aside, I always love a good outtake photo. I think it shows all the hard work that is actually put into the attempts to take beautiful pictures. Not everyone always appreciates that photos are actually something that take quite a bit of effort - from the photographer, from the child, and even from the parents!

Claire wasn't exactly "feeling" pictures yesterday. This is completely normal for a 2 or 3 year old. I always try and reassure parents that "we are getting great shots, don't worry about the tears in between," but somehow I think they always leave feeling a bit defeated.

Here were a couple of my favorites:

Claire's mom was trying to show her how she needed to put her head in her hands - as you can see, she wasn't exactly thrilled. Lol.

I was able to calm her down with some skittles. She still wasn't thrilled with the idea, but after this point, we got some fantastic smiles. See? A little candy can go a looong way. ;)

Stephanie has been gone for a couple of weeks on maternity leave, and Thad asks when she's coming back every single day. Today, when she came to the studio, my husband said that all Thaddeus asked about when they drove to swim lessons was Mrs. V.

Today I got to meet the two special little guys (and one big guy!) in her life. At 10 days old, the newest member of the V family gave me quite a run for my money.

But at the end of the day, we got some really beautiful images.

And some super cute/cheesy ones, too!

If your or someone you know is pregnant, it is best to schedule your newborn session by the eighth month of pregnancy.

Spring is in the air! (Although, between us, you can't really tell - it's in the thirties here, and there's about an inch of ice on my car).

These two came over this afternoon for some photos. I've had some new petti skirts and paper I was chomping at the bit to try out, and what better kiddos to try them out on?

Aren't they gorgeous? And those blue eyes...uh, I'm pretty sure they get away with everything at home.

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.

About a year ago, I was perusing one of the online forums that I belong to full of other photographers, and I noticed a woman who mentioned being a member of an organization called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. Curious as to what this was, I googled it.

The first thing I saw was the organization's mission statement:

To introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture. We believe these images serve as an important step in the family's healing process by honoring their child's legacy.

This entire concept struck a chord inside of me, although to this day, I really am not sure why. Having been blessed with a beautiful, healthy baby boy in September of 2007, I could in no way relate to the loss or suffering that these families were experiencing. What I could do, however, was give myself to this organization with the hope of being able to help at least one of these families in this grieving process.

So I applied, and 6 weeks later I was accepted.

Being a member of this organization is in no way glamorous. When people ask me about it, they walk away from the conversation, I am convinced, thinking that I am some crazy, morbid person. I mean, I willingly dedicate myself to different times each month in which I use my camera to photograph children who have passed away?

To which my response is, "Absolutely." Because if people like myself, and those who volunteer as well, weren't around for this, how else would these families be able to capture beautiful memories of their darling children?

The joy of being a parent is extraordinary - even if that joy is fleeting. Don't these parents deserve the same chance to look upon that joy and remember it for what it is - and what it was - through moments captured on film?

I believe that they do, which is why I whole-heartedly believe in this organization.

If you are a photographer in the Grand Rapids, MI, area, I encourage you to attend our informational meeting on April 18. If only to listen to some testimonials and think about the potential - that's all I ask.

If you are a photographer in another area of the country, I encourage you to contact the organization through their Web site, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, to see if they have meetings in your area or if there is even a chapter of photographers established where you are. So many parents miss out on this gift because there simply aren't any photographers in the area who have given themselves to this cause.

Denver Boudoir dates!

I've decided to take a last-minute trip to Denver in mid-April and am opening up that weekend for boudoir sessions!

I can only take on 5 sessions or 2 boudoir parties (groups of 3 or more) so contact me soon if you're interested! I can send you all of the package and pricing information via email to make the process quicker.

As always, groups of 3 or more get $100 off the package of their choice, and I always like to throw in some champagne and chocolate. ;)

Isn't that awesome? I love the idea of sending out CDs that are customized with photos. It makes me want to send them out for my son, too. Lol.

Mini Sessions

I absolutely love doing mini sessions. It's like doing 10 photo shoots in one day, but it is 9 times less exhausting. :)

This year I plan to host sessions both indoors and outdoors - depending on preference of the client.

Mini sessions are 30 minutes and include unlimited outfit changes. For $75, you will receive (3) digital files and (2) 5x7s. For an additional $55, you can get the entire CD of images (around 10 - 15 images).

This little guy was in my studio a year-and-a-half ago...

I was in love with his little baby chub then, and I'm in love with his little toddler chub now.

A lot of times, when you photograph two-year-olds, you are doing a lot of bribing, running around, making noises, etc.

This guy?

He just sat there. And smiled on command. And took the occasional break. And never cried.

Perfect.

Mallory, thanks for bringing this cutie back to my studio. See you in May! :)

What to Wear I Boudoir edition

Clients are always saying to me, "Katie, I have no idea what to bring or what to wear."

My answer to them is to wear something that makes them feel sexy. Whether "feeling sexy" means sporting your favorite flannel pajamas, or sporting a piece of fishing wire with high heels - you need to wear what makes you feel great.

I put together just a few ideas, and these don't even cover all the potentials.

You can go with a "theme" - I once had a client who wore a sailor cap, cuffs, and her lingerie was red, white and blue.

Corsets are always sexy, though I don't have any on display in this post.

I encourage high heels that are a tad above the "norm" - while your basic black pumps will do, I think it's always fun to photograph shoes that are extremely sexy, or super flashy. But then again, I like to think of photography as art, so the "weirder" the better. Lol.

Or, you can forego the heels altogether, and just stick with your super sexy toes painted a deep shade of red. Guys always love that, too.

This first one is what I call "Pretty in Pink."

It's cute and sweet, and yet sexy and sultry. Plus, this color photographs well on just about every human being on earth.

Your man's cowboy boots (I've seen it done...it was so cute)
Panties with a cute little message, i.e. "Mrs. Smith" or "Bride to Be"
A guitar or something of sentiment

This little beauty was in my studio just a little under one year ago.

My, what a difference a year makes!

Not only has she grown so much, but she has gone from being that quiet little baby in the dress to a beautiful, rambunctious 2-year-old who absolutely 100% refuses to stop for anything...even the camera. Lol.

We bribed Gaby with everything from bubbles to chewing gum to pony rides on her brother's back. At the end of the day, you do what it takes. ;)

Sometimes it's nice to step away from the "business" aspect of the camera, and just take some time to capture your own child.

Thad loves his bath. He spends his time laughing, splashing, and getting in trouble because he loves to throw toys out onto the floor.

I got right in on the action tonight...even sacrificing my camera at one point, as he attempted to splash me. Lol.

Eleven years ago, when ~~Miss Rawr~~ Miss R and I were at Disneyland in California, celebrating our high school graduation, I bet neither one of us would have ever guessed that some day she would be posing for me in lingerie, and I would be plastering her rockin' bod all over the Internet! My trip to Denver was definitely eventful.

Even though I had sworn off photo sessions for the rest of the year, I still had one more big one under my sleeve...about 11 boudoir shoots lined up for my trip.

Unfortunately, I had to cancel a few of them because of other circumstances.

But, I still managed to sneak in one full day with some fantastic ladies.

Like Miss A, for example.

I absolutely loved working with her. She wasn't so much into showing off super sexy lingerie as she was wanting to incorporate the things that she loves into the mix (hence the guitar and the awesome board boots).

That's what makes a woman sexy - confidence. She rocked the board boots just like anyone else would have rocked the stilettos. :)

The Baker Family. {Grand Rapids Family Photographer}

Hilda contacted me a few months back after having been given my business card from her oldest daughter (not pictured). I had been at a garage sale over the summer, and saw the cutest little handmade bows for little girls. Of course, with one dozen photos in mind, I snatched them all up, and traded business cards with the homeowner. She must have liked what she had seen, because she referred her mom to my site!

So, we got together for my last and final session of the year (until Boudoir). Wow - you never quite realize how quick and easy it can be to take photos of older children until you actually do it.

Eye contact.

Smiles.

Focus.

What!?!?

It was definitely foreign territory, and I think our session took all of 30 minutes, lol. I suppose it also made my job easier that they just wanted some classic black and white photos as well.

Aren't these girls just gorgeous!? I feel like they should be hanging on some huge white canvas in a GAP store. Such a beautiful family!

The Tiffany family was another family that traveled a pretty great distance to take advantage of my Christmas specials.

What a dynamic - they had a bouncy little girl who loved the camera, and an adorable little boy who really just wanted to play with the trains that I have in my studio. (I mean come on, is that so much to ask!?!? Lol.)

They were total troopers, too. We braved the cold, got some great shots, and we also managed to snag a few indoors.
