My friend, Samm

This is my friend, Samm.

In 2008, Samm was diagnosed with Glomerular Nephritis while newly pregnant with her son, Brode. As a young college student, Samm went under-treated for strep throat. The strep caused inflammation that slowly damaged her kidneys over time, and her kidney function is now in the lower single digits -- roughly 4 to 6%.

Today, Samm is roughly six to eight weeks away from the start of dialysis. While dialysis is a life-saving treatment, it is not a cure. With a mortality rate of 20% per year, the average dialysis patient typically lives for only 36 months from the time they begin treatment. Samm's best hope is for a kidney transplant.

Are you a donor? Would you like to be? Did you know that the life expectancy of an organ donor is no different from that of someone who has two functioning kidneys?

If you would like to be considered as an organ donor, the first thing you will need to do is register at donatelife.net.

More specifically, to be an organ donor for Samm, you will need a blood type of "A" or "O"; the +/- is of no effect. You must be in good health, and have no risk for kidney disease (i.e. high blood pressure or diabetes).

You will need to call Porter Transplant to begin the process. The process is absolutely confidential and you can back out at any time, no questions asked.

Here is the number: (855) 869-5164.

Please state that you are interested in being an organ donor for Samantha Beary.

Even if you are not a match for Samm, please consider being a donor for someone in need! You may not know Samm, but you may know someone like her. And even if you don't think you know someone like her...some day you might.

Samm is a young mother, with so much more life to live. Please consider at least being tested and placed on the donor list. You will be saving a life!

If you are interested in following Samm's story, please take a moment to "Like" the Facebook page, A Kidney for Samm. I'd love to help her find a donor -- she has such a bright future ahead of her. Please consider spreading the word for this beautiful mom and her son, Brode!
